Barcelona has managed to position itself in recent years as a worldwide music festival destination. Many international and national artists find in the Catalan capital the right stage to offer their best show and connect with the European audience in a Mediterranean atmosphere. But in addition to concerts and live music venues, Barcelona has managed to position itself as a musical destination thanks to the raise of many international music festivals, such as Primavera Sound and Sónar.
Lovers of live music look forward to the arrival of spring to visit Barcelona and begin the festival season enjoying the music and the charm of these music festivals. During these dates the city gets pretty crowded as people from all over the world come to enjoy the music, so it’s always advisable to rent a bed and breakfast room in Barcelona in advance before every hotel room is booked.
Even if these two festivals have many things in common, they both have a very unique character and style, let’s have a look at what these music festivals in Barcelona offer to their audience and the reasons of their enormous success.
The first appointment to start with the music festival season in Barcelona is Primavera Sound, which is hold from the 31st of May to the 4th of June in the Parc del Fòrum in Barcelona. Last year’s edition closed with more than 175.000 attendants and they are planning to overcome this amount this year.
Artists such as Radiohead, LCD Soundsystem, PJ Harvey, Tame Impala, Sigur Rós, Arcade Fire, Pet Shop Boys, New Order or Bon Iver among others have delighted music lovers during its sixteen editions.
This festival is well-known for its approach to indie music, but they launched a big novelty in the last edition 2016; the Beach Club. This is a stage of electronic music, offering 18 hours of the most important DJ’s that made everyone dance wild from noon until dawn.
Once Primavera Sound is over, people get ready for the second big summer festival, Sónar. With just fifteen days of difference Sónar will start on the 15th of June and it will last for three days. Sónar is undoubtedly the most important electronic and experimental musical hub on the world, as it is much more than just a music festival.
It’s organized in two different venues. Sonar by Day and Sonar +D at the Fira de Montjuïc and Sónar by Night at the Fira de Gran Vía. Whilst Sonar by Day and Sonar by Night showcases the most important and emerging DJ’s in the world, as well as some local artists, Sonar + D is a congress where technology and creative industries converge.
So as you see Barcelona is the ideal destinations for live music lovers during the beginning of the summer. Choose the festival that suits your interests best and get ready for some nice and musical holidays in this Mediterranean city.
