Pronouncing the name of this district may not be easy for many foreigners, but getting lost in the streets of L’Eixample doesn’t usually present a problem. This modern area of Barcelona was designed by the engineer Cerdà in the middle of the 19th century. The old town created in the Middle Ages could no longer accommodate all its inhabitants, so the center needed an extension (which is what its name Eixample means in Catalan).
