Castanyada (roast chestnuts)
The Castanyada is a festival of Christian origin that is celebrated on the night of October 31st. The next day, the 1st, people usually go to cemeteries to visit loved ones who have already left.
In the same way as Halloween, the Castanyada comes from a funerary ritual party, in which the townspeople helped the bell ringers of the churches to perform the task of ringing the bells during the night of the 31st to honor the deceased. In order to recover from the hard work, calorie and energetic foods such as sweet potatoes, roast chestnuts, candied fruit and some typical cakes called panellets. The drink to accompany the meal is the moscatell (traditional wine).
This is a traditional All Saints and Halloween meal in Catalonia. Nowadays, the most common of all these plates are castanyes (roast chestnuts).
