Living Barcelona in an Eixample apartment

The Eixample is undoubtedly one of the most populated and charismatic quarters of Barcelona. It is remarkable not only for being the most populated and therefore, which better summarizes the Barcelona character, but because it has its own personality, which can be seen in every street and building. No doubt: if you want an authentic Barcelona citizen experience, an apartment in the Eixample is your best choice

A neighbourhood with divided-heart

Don’t make any mistake: every corner of the Eixample is different, and therefore it is not the same living in a neighbourhood or in another. Each corner has its peculiarities, its traditions and its landmarks.

This leads us to appreciate the Eixample not as a whole, not as a swarm of highly organized buildings but as the sum of different pieces of puzzles that form a magnificent whole. And those pieces are grouped into two main areas: the Eixample Esquerra and the Eixample Dreta.

It cannot be considered that an area is better than the other; we need to agree with that idea from its proud inhabitants. Each Eixample is unique and deserves at least one visit.

The best of Eixample Esquerra

Despite often known as “the new part” it is in a corner of this district in the neighbourhood of Sant Antoni where we find the opening part of the whole EixampletheTarraco House. It was the first building to rise from the excellent development plan that created the Eixample. Today it is obsolete but saved from an imminent demolition, thanks in part to its historical value and the imposing and beautiful graffiti presiding the entire facade.

But the charm of Eixample Esquerra doesn’t stop there: the delicacy with which the Mall Las Arenas has kept all the structure of the bullring of Mudejar style that preceded it makes this place the perfect gateway to Montjuïc and an apartment in Miró Park offers the perfect location to enjoy both wonders and a park which hosts the curious sculpture Dona i Ocell.

The best of the Eixample Dreta

Referring to the Eixample Dreta and not talking about its most famous inhabitant, it’s a sin. This is clearly the Sagrada Familia. But there is so much more than Gaudi and the Sagrada Familia in the Eixample Dreta: the Monumental Bullring, stunning promenades like Sant Joan or the must-see Paseo de Gracia, the Encants Market, the indispensable Hospital de Sant Pau …. and many others that have transformed this area into a sea of jewels and secrets.

Regarding people, we will find them of all kinds, and they are used to deal cordially with all the hordes of tourists who visit the place and who are delighted by it. So if you have questions or want to discover some of the secrets behind this particular neighbourhood, contact with any of its neighbours.

The testing area of modernism

Especially in the Eixample Dreta we can find the biggest testing area of the Catalan Modernism.

The years of construction and commissioning of this unique district coincided with the heyday of the modernist architectural and cultural movement, which, besides being a more affordable land and with better infrastructure, empowered many families who built their imposing residences according to the pompous dominant styling.

Thus, for many notable figures like Gaudí, the Güell family, Puig i Cadafalch, Domenech i Montaner and so on, this prominent neighbourhood was used as a testing area.

La Casa de les Puntxes, Palau Baró, Sayrach House, Casa Milá (known as La Pedrera) … are some examples of jewellery of the more modernist Eixample, but certainly, we find in the “bone of contention” the greatest exponent of this style and its highlight.

For all these reasons and many others that will be discovered, such as its charming shopping environment, its gentle people and the quadrangles of each block, renting an apartment in the Eixample is a great decision and a way of experiencing a different tourism in Barcelona.
